- fmt

Leak hints of sabotage in PKR...
The leaking of de-facto opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s letter that was written in prison reeks of desperation and opportunism. It also hints of sabotage within his party as the PKR leadership says it was meant for internal discussions.
The leak has the party at odds. In his letter, Anwar expressed regret over the excessive involvement of PKR leaders in the Citizens’ Declaration and warned of the dangers of cooperating with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Whether the letter was meant for public consumption or not, it looked as if it was meant to pull the brakes on the Citizen’s Declaration initiated in March to unseat Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
A party leader said yesterday there are people within the party who are working for Mahathir, and their interest goes beyond taking down Najib.
If there is betrayal of Anwar in PKR, change could be imminent in the party. Whether it is serving Mahathir’s purpose or an outright sabotage, the party could start cleaning up within. There could be a move to weed out dissenters in its ranks.
Is a purge needed, and can PKR afford to clean house?
The letter has put Anwar in bad light, giving an impression that he was never entirely interested in working with Mahathir in ousting Najib or that he is a sore loser who couldn’t let go of the past.
If there are people planted within the party to cause damage from within, the views of some political observers have been proven true. Some have said Mahathir’s intention of launching the Citizen’s Declaration in collaboration with the Opposition parties was to create a ‘front’ to enable him to regain control in Umno.
Mahathir is said to be using the declaration and the Opposition to realise his goal of removing Najib and reinstating his cronies.
As it is, PKR does not look too good after the fiasco that led to the drubbing at the Sarawak State Election recently. The infighting during the election could be early indications of more acts of sabotage that would hurt PKR’s credibility.
The election is only one of the many doubtful acts of PKR as it went against Pakatan Harapan’s promises to be a better government than the Barisan Nasional-led government now.
If Mahathir was sincere in wanting to forget the past, why did he disparage Anwar during his interviews with the foreign media?
Party betrayals aside, did the local media damaged its credibility by publishing Anwar’s letter without checking if it was meant for public consumption?
Was it right to break the news without weighing the possibilities being manipulated? Did it go too far by not respecting the privacy of individuals and matters that were deemed as internal matters? - Soo Wern Jun,theheatmalaysia
