- mk
Sirul 'betrayed', says mum...
According to PAS organ Harakah Daily, Piah, 74, said the family still hopes that Sirul would be freed after being sentenced to death for the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu.
"Only Allah knows how I feel, I can only pray that he remains safe," the publication quoted her as saying after several PAS leaders visited Sirul's family home in Taiping.
Sirul did not appear in court for the verdict and is currently in Australia.
PAS information chief Mahfuz Omar (left in photo) had paid the visit - along with PAS Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat - to the family home.
Piah also described her son as someone who was responsible and hardworking, according to the report.
She referred to him as someone who cared for the family and - as the fourth child among eight siblings - constantly kept in touch with them.
Meanwhile, Piah noted that the stories being told about her son had made her feel "ashamed" to meet people.
"There are also people who say all sorts of things, they say he's been paid off despite the fact that he did not get anything, until now I am ashamed to meet people," she admitted.
Piah also lamented that these were trying times for the family as Sirul's younger brother had passed away just last year.
Sirul, who apparently fled the country before the verdict was announced on Jan 13, was arrested in Brisbane by the Australian authorities.
Malaysia is expected to seek his extradiction but Australia has a policy of not sending an individual back to his home country should he face the death penalty there. - mk
Sirul yet to be brought to court for extradition...
This is according to his lawyers, Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin and Hasnal Rezua Merican, both of whom are in Sydney to meet their client.
Malaysia’s Attorney-General’s Chambers will need to make a formal application for extradition, requiring Sirul to be brought to court for the request to be heard by a magistrate.
Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had previously said that his ministry had submitted a request to extradite Sirul.
Meanwhile, Sirul’s lawyer Kamarul (left) said his client is looking at hiring Australian lawyers to represent him in his fight against detention and possible extradition.
"I can confirm that we have met Sirul and he is well and well-treated by the Australian authorities,” Kamarul told Malaysiakini by telephone today.
"Besides this, we are seeing or engaging Australian lawyers to discuss his detention. Sirul has also expressed his desire that we should continue to represent him and deal with his legal matters.”
When asked whether they knew whether the Attorney-General’s Chambers had filed an application to extradite him, Kamarul said he cannot confirm the matter.
Kamarul said his client was detained by Australia's Immigration and Border Protection Department following the Interpol’s red notice issued on Jan 20.
Unaware of Sirul’s mother’s remarks
Asked to comment on reports which appeared in PAS organ Harakah, where party leaders met Sirul's mother Piah Samat, who expressed that she felt her son was "betrayed", Kamarul said he and Sirul were not aware of such report and hence, could not comment on the matter.
Piah, 74, was reported to have said that his son had been betrayed for merely doing his duty as a police officer and hopes that her son will be freed despite being sentenced to death for the murder of Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu.
"Only Allah knows how I feel, I can only pray that he remains safe," Harakah quoted Piah as saying.
Sirul was arrested on Jan 20 in Brisbane where he had been staying with his 19-year-old son and a relative, and is now being detained at Sydney’s Villawood detention centre, a maximum security prison in Australia.
While Australia and Malaysia have inked an extradition treaty, Sirul’s deportation is expected to be hampered by Canberra’s firm stand against death penalty, where it will not deport anyone facing capital punishment back to the country demanding it. - mk
Hadi sepatutnya tukaq kapai...
PasMa hints that Hadi should abandon ship...
Speaking to Malaysiakini today, he said those in PAS who are opposed to Pakatan Rakyat should be the ones to abandon ship.
In a Facebook posting yesterday, Hadi had employed a seafaring analogy to hit out at PasMA, which he accused of "punching holes in its own vessel."
He said that PasMa should opt to switch ships if they wished to reach the intended destination faster.
"Go to the DAP ship, PKR ship, if you want to reach Putrajaya quicker, join the Umno ship," he added.
However, Phahrolrazi pointed out that the party annual assembly (muktamar) agreed that PAS should remain in Pakatan.
"That was the decision of PAS and the muktamar.
"So those who don't agree with that principle (of staying with Pakatan) also don't agree with what has been decided by PAS.
"They are the ones who should leave the party," he said.
Phahrolrazi also argued that disagreeing with PAS leaders and possessing a different opinion do not mean that members must exit the party.
He also pointed out that the attack on PasMa by Hadi was irrelevant as not all in PasMa are PAS members.
"PasMa is an NGO, which is an entity on its own - the question of going in or out of PAS does not arise as PasMa never joined PAS in the first place," he added.- mk
