Beliau menyatakan negara Islam tidak membezakan pemimpin dari segi jantina sebaliknya kebolehan.
"Kami tidak membezakan antara lelaki dan wanita. Kalau mereka (rakyat) nak wanita (jadi pemimpin) mereka akan mendapat wanita."Kita lihat ia berlaku di banyak negara Muslim," kata beliau ketika diminta memberi komen mengenai Selangor bakal mendapat menteri besar wanita.
Presiden PKR Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Qan Ismail dispekulasikan sebagai bakal MB baru menggantikan Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim susulan kritikan parti PKR terhadap beliau.
Mahathir bagaimanapun tidak mengulas secara langsung mengenai kenyataan peguam Umno Datuk Hafarizam Harun yang menyatakan Wan Azizah tidak boleh menjadi MB kerana perempuan mempunyai kesukaran menghadiri majlis keagamaan bersama sultan kerana datang haid.
Beliau ditemui ketika melancarkan kempen "Drive For Gaza" (Pandu untuk Gaza) di Proton Center of Excellence, Shah Alam hari ini.
Tak perlu tunggu OIC
Bekas PM ini turut meluahkan kekecewaan terhadap Pertubuhan Negara-negara Islam (OIC) yang seolah berdiam diri dengan isu Gaza.
Bagaimanapun Mahathir menyatakan negara Islam lain patut mengambil tindakan memberi bantuan tanpa menunggu OIC.
"Saya
berpendapat bahawa tak perlu tunggu OIC. Negara ahli yang bersependapat
boleh buat kumpulan lima, enam atau 10 negara bersetuju untuk ambil
tindakan (ke atas krisis Gaza).Mahathir berkata beliau menyokong usaha NGO Malaysia yang mahu membawa doktor dan sukarelawan membantu penduduk Gaza dan berharap Mesir bawah pentadbiran baru membuka pintu masuk untuk bantuan.
"Yang penting ialah di pintu masuk Rafah dibuka... kadangkala kita dapati Mesir tak benarkan pelawat dan bahan bantuan masuk ke Gaza.
"Saya harap kerajaan baru Mesir ni beri lebih kerjasama hanya untuk hantar makanan dan ubat-ubatan yang diperlukan oleh rakyat Gaza," kata beliau.
PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has received a rare endorsement from her husband's arch nemesis, Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The former premier said there is nothing wrong with a woman holding leadership positions, including that of menteri besar.
He was asked to comment on the speculation that Wan Azizah, the wife of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, might replace Khalid Ibrahim as Selangor menteri besar.
Mahathir stressed that
Islamic nations did not differentiate leaders based on sex but rather capabilities."There is no distinction between men and women. If the people want a woman (to be a leader), they will get a woman.
"We have seen this happen in many Islamic countries," he said.
Previously, Umno lawyer Mohd Hafarizam Harun said a woman might not be suitable due to among others, being unable to accompany the sultan in religious functions in the time of her menses.
His comments drew flak from both sides of the political divide.
Mahathir, however, did not comment on Hafarizam's statement.
The former premier was speaking to reporters after launching the "Drive For Gaza" campaign at the Proton Centre of Excellence in Shah Alam.
Speaking on the situation in Gaza, Mahathir expressed disappointment with Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) for keeping quiet on the issue.
He said other Muslim countries should provide aid without waiting for the OIC.- mk
Conflicting remarks by Zahid, IGP on ransom...
It seems like Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar and his boss Ahmad Zahid Hamidi are not on the same page over a report that a RM10 million ransom was demanded by the gunmen who abducted a policeman in Pulau Mabul, Sabah.
While the police chief dismissed the New Straits Times report, the home minister, however, confirmed that the abductors of Zakiah Aliep, 26, had demanded the ransom.However, Bernama quoted Zahid as saying that the government would not entertain the demand.
At a press conference this morning, Khalid slammed the English daily for putting the abducted policeman in danger and advised the public not to listen to rumours.
"NST is putting my man in danger. I hope there are no others that are following the paper," he said in reference to the report, which quoted sources.
“I requested that there be no reports on ransom, but (the New) Straits Times picked up rumours and turned it into news. Don’t be like that.”
He refused to budge when pressed further.
“I said, don’t talk about ransom.”
Criminal dens
Zakia was abducted on Saturday night from a resort at Pulau Mabul, while his colleague Ab Rajah Jamuan, 30, was shot dead.
CCTV footage from the resort reportedly showed the police personnel having a meal in plainclothes when ambushed, while their weapons were left in their boat.
On a related matter, Khalid said that the government has plans to move
those living at floating villages as these places are “criminal dens” (sarang penjenayah) as well as health hazards.“It will take some time as the relocation area will need to be ascertained. In fact, we have already started a census, and those who are non-citizens will be deported. The relocation is only for citizens,” he said.
Police also yesterday announced several steps to beef up security on the Sabah east coast, including deploying more than 600 extra security personnel and imposing designated sea routes.- mk
