'Why ban, if soup kitchens can be tourist attraction'...
PAS vice-president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party disagrees with the minister that the noble efforts of providing food to the homeless were "spoiling the city's image" as the latter claimed.
"Probably, with cooperation from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), activities in the soup kitchens can also be turned into a tourist attraction that brings benefits to the people of KL," Tuan Ibrahim (right) said in a statement today.
"PAS suggests Tengku Adnan himself comes down to see the suffering of the city's poor," he said, saying the government should be assisting charitable NGOs care for the homeless.
"DBKL should instead be lending a hand to the NGOs that are involved in the soup kitchens, instead of driving them away (from the city)," he said.
Tuan Ibrahim added that instead of keeping the homeless away from the city centre, Tengku Adnan could better spend his time cleaning up the city of crime and other unsavoury elements.
"It's better for Tengku Adnan to suggest that the 2km radius of the city's centre, from Lot 10, be gazetted as an area that is free from crime, secret societies, dirty toilets and potholes.
"This is actually more beneficial to improving the image of Kuala Lumpur than to ban charitable acts of the soup kitchens," Tuan Ibrahim said.
Echoing this, former Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin said Tengku Adnan should first clear out vice from the city, instead of trying to clean out the poor and homeless.
"May I suggest cleaning up Kuala Lumpur of entertainment centres and activities that are detrimental to people's morals and character?" Mohd Asri said in a Facebook postin today.- mk
Open your mansion to the poor, Ku Nan told...
The former carpet merchant-turned-politician courted brickbats when he warned that those who gave alms to beggars would be fined and demanded soup kitchens which fed the homeless be relocated.
Peppered with liberal doses of sarcasm, an opposition lawmaker offered a suggestion to assist Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (left) in his clean-up task.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, N Surendran said the minister should throw open the doors of his sprawling four-storey Jalan Duta mansion in an upmarket suburb in Kuala Lumpur.
The PKR MP believes that the breathtaking bungalow might provide enough room to house all of the city’s homeless people.
"Perhaps in the spirit of Ramadan, Tengku Adnan should also offer the banished soup kitchens to set up in his large beautiful grounds.
"Having grossly insulted the poor, this is the least he could do," he added.
Enormous gulf
On a more serious note, Surendran said living in such sumptuous surroundings, Tengku Adnan cannot relate to the hopelessness, suffering and daily struggles of the poor.
The issue, he stressed, also highlighted the enormous gulf between ordinary Malaysians and Umno leaders.
"How do these full-time politicians amass such wealth? The public is entitled to know.
"Why are there so many impoverished and homeless people on the streets when Umno ministers live in mansions in prime areas?" he asked.
Contrary to Tengku Adnan’s argument that the homeless and destitute tarnish the city's image, Surendran (right) reminded the Umno secretary-general that these are human beings in need of help.
As a senior cabinet member, Surendran said the minister should accept the responsibility to solve the poverty problem.
"Tengku Adnan should not try to sweep the issue under the carpet by hounding and jailing the poor as well as banishing the soup kitchens," he added.- mk
