A teenage male was shot dead this morning while security forces were tracking intruders near the red zone, says inspector-general of police Ismail Omar.

"At 9.45 this morning, our forces were tracking the terrorists in an area at Kampung Sungai Bilis.

"Suddenly, three adult males and two adult females appeared out of the bushes. Our security forces immediately detained them and searched them.

"During the frisking exercise, they heard sounds from within the bushes and spontaneously fired in that direction," he told a press conference at Felda Residence Sabahat, Lahad Datu, this evening.

Upon inspecting the bushes, the security forces discovered they had shot two people.

A teenager believed, to be aged between 13 and 15 years, was shot dead while a man believed to be in his 30s was injured in a leg.

Asked if they were the intruders, Ismail said police were still trying to determine their identities, including the five others detained before them.

"They did not have any documents so we are invesitgating where are they from and what they were doing there," he said.

Kampung Sungai Bilis is a village near Tanjung Batu.

"After we were informed of this incident, our tactical command centre immediately deployed a military medical team in an armoured vehicle to the location and the seven, including the injured and dead, were successfully extracted," Ismail said.

More arrests made

He added that the detainees were not in possession of any weapon.

Since the crisis began on Feb 12, a total of 62 people have been killed - 53 intruders, eight police officers and now an unidentified teenager.

In other developments, Ismail said, police arrested three men in Kampung Perigi, Semporna, this morning and another two at an open field along the Jalan Semporna-Tawau road.

He said this was in relation to the investigation of the Kampung Simunul, Semporna, incident where six police officers were massacred.

"We believe they are linked to the terrorist group," Ismail sad.

The three would be investigated under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act and Section 130(c) of the Penal Code concerning acts of terrorism.-malaysiakini
