EC is living in its own dream world...

kuala terengganu parliament by election spr ec announcement 051208 wan ahmad wan omarThe Election Commission (EC) will not give in to the resignation demand of Bersih 2.0 because the irregularities in the electoral roll the electoral reform coalition revealed yesterday are just "technical issues", commission deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar says.

"Who is Bersih 2.0 to have the power to demand the EC panel to resign? They are an unregistered NGO. It is useless to call for a press conference because the main issue of electoral roll involves technical matters,"  mStar quotes Wan Ahmad (right) as saying.

Wan Ahmad told the news portal that electoral reform coalition Bersih 2.0 has no power to raise such a demand because the EC is appointed by the Yang d-Pertuan Agong, as stipulated by the federal constitution.

The Election Commission (EC) is living in its own dream world, said Bersih 3.0 co-chairman A Samad Said today.

The national laureate was responding to EC deputy chairman Wan Ahmad Wan Omar’s statement that Bersih, being an illegal outfit, had no right to call for the resignation of the commission’s officials.

He also claimed, according to a news report, that the majority of Malaysians still had faith in the commission and Bersih was just a minority voice.

However, Samad begged to differ.

The 77-year-old poet said that the majority of Malaysians don’t have confidence in EC, which Bersih accused of favouring the Barisan Nasional ruling government.

“Wan Ahmad can call us illegal or whatever he wants. The truth is the entire EC board must resign as they have failed to carry out their duties entrusted by the people,” he stressed.

Bersih steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah said illegal or otherwise, as citizens of Malaysia, Bersih had the right to voice out against electoral irregularities.

“We asked the EC officials to resign because they failed to clean up the electoral roll,” she said, adding that EC was behaving in an arrogant manner by ignoring the demands.

Bersih is scheduled to hold its third rally at Dataran Merdeka on April 28.- FMT
