Bersih 3.0 jika tidak laksana tuntutan- Ambiga...

Pengerusi Bersih 2.0, Datuk S.Ambiga memberi amaran bahawa gabungan itu akan menganjurkan Himpunan Bersih 3.0, sekiranya kerajaan masih gagal menunaikan tuntutan untuk melaksanakan pilihan raya bersih dan adil.

Menurut Ambiga, pihaknya telah melakukan pelbagai cara termasuk menerusi kaedah rundingan dan menegaskan gabungan itu turut menggesa Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR) menerima cadangan Jawatankuasa Pilihan Khas Parlimen (PSC) bagi penambahbaikan proses pilihan raya.

Ia mesti dilaksanakan (oleh Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya). Maka kita akan cuba semua itu, namun sekiranya mereka (SPR) tidak memenuhinya sebelum PRU, kami tidak menolak kemungkinan untuk menggerakkan Bersih 3,” tegas Ambiga. Menurut Ambiga, adalah jelas SPR tidak menghormati cadangan yang dikemukakan PSC dan Parlimen sekiranya suruhanjaya itu masih tidak mahu melaksanakan lapan tuntutan Bersih.

Di sidang media sama, Sasterawan Negara, A Samad Said turut mengatakan Bersih 3.0 adalah alternatif terakhir sekiranya tuntutan itu tidak dilaksanakan.

“Sekiranya semua pilihan tidak dilaksanakan, memang tidak mustahil akan diadakan Bersih 3.0,”

Bersih hari ini melancarkan Kempen Jom 100 bertujuan menarik seramai mungkin pengundi berdaftar untuk keluar mengundi bagi mencapai sasaran 100 % keluar mengundi pada Pilihan Raya Umum (PRU) ke-13 akan datang.

Pada PRU ke-12 sebelum ini, seramai 8.16 juta rakyat menunaikan tanggungjawab mereka mengundi untuk memilih wakil rakyat masing-masing.

Bersih 3 if polls reform fails...

The NGO coalition for clean and fair elections may take to the streets again should the authorities fail to implement its recommendations on electoral reform.

Speaking to the media after launching a voter education campaign in Kuala Lumpur today, Bersih 2.0 chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan said she fears that the authorities will not abide by the recommendations of the parliamentary select committee (PSC) on electoral reforms.

“The PSC can come up with their recommendations, but they may not be implemented.

“If they don’t fulfil these recommendations, I don’t rule out another Bersih rally before GE,” she said.

Ambiga led Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9 when thousands of people from all walks of life converged in Kuala Lumpur to demand for electoral reforms.

The lawyer also expressed disappointment with the recommendations made in the first PSC report.

She said the use of indelible ink as recommended by the PSC was only “one of the eight (Bersih) demands, despite being ‘a good thing’”.

“I am looking forward to seeing more recommendations in PSC’s second report,” she said.

Meanwhile, Bersih will also go on a nationwide campaign aimed at achieving a 100 percent voter turnout in the forthcoming election.

The campaign themed 'Jom 100' will kick-start after the Chinese New Year holidays.

“If there is a larger number of voters, it will also mitigate the effects of election fraud and gerrymandering, because there are only so many phantom voters who can vote,” she added.

Ambiga also urged overseas voters to come home to vote as they were denied the right to be registered as absent voters in a legal bid recently.

She added that national laureate A Samad Said will be appointed Bersih co-chairperson and student activist Shukri Abdul Razab as a steering committee member.

Anwar warns Utusan with RM50m suit over gay jibe

Meanwhile, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has threatened to sue Utusan Malaysia for RM50 million for defamation unless the daily retracts its front-page report today which suggested that he had a pro-homosexuality stance.

In a statement today, PKR vice-president N Surendran said a letter of demand have been served on Utusan's parent company to demand the retraction and an apology. Surendran was referring to the several reports in Utusan today, which carries responses to BBC's recent interview with Anwar, in which the issue of homosexuality was raised.

Surendran pointed out that in the same interview, although Anwar had responded to the query by stating that some "archaic" punitive laws needs to be reviewed, he never stated that homosexuality should be legalised.

"We, Muslim and non-muslim generally believe and are committed to support the sanctity of marriage between man and woman in Malaysia.

"We do not promote homosexuality in the public sphere and domain," Anwar told the BBC.

In view of this, Surendran said the Utusan article was malicious and defamatory to Anwar.

He adds that the report was also "scurrilous, politically motivated and gutter journalism of the lowest kind." The letter of demand states that Utusan has 48 hours to comply, failing which legal action will be taken.
