PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu today alleged that he has received several threats to his family's safety, following "libellous" reports on his speech in Tasik Gelugor, Penang, last month.
"Yesterday, I received a mobile text message from someone threatening to splash acid on my wife and daughter," he said at the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
Reading out the text message from an unidentified source, he said that the "serious threat" was among several others received over the past few days.
It is because of this that he has decided to make good on his intention to take Malay-language daily Utusan Malaysia, which published the "libellous" report on Aug 27, to court.
His lawyer, Hanipa Maidin, who was also present, said a letter has been sent to the daily demanding a retraction of the report and an apology within 24 hours. Failing this, Hanipa said, a writ of summons would be filed in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur.
Asked if a police report had been lodged on the threat, Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, said he would discuss this with his lawyer as there were fears that this would lead to his (Mat Sabu's) arrest.
Hundreds of police reports have been lodged against Mat Sabu, mostly by former policemen and military servicemen, pertaining to the politician's speech.
Mat Sabu is also mulling a suit against Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin overr the latter's press statements. But the suit will not be filed if the deputy prime minister agrees to debate Mat Sabu on Mat Indera and the Bukit Kepong incident that took place in 1950.
Mat Sabu has also instructed Hanipa to file a suit against Umno Youth information chief Reezal Merican Naina Merican on the issue of the PAS leader's medical bills. Reezal had alleged that Mat Sabu's medical expenses for a knee operation, following an injury sustained during the Bersih 2.0 rally, was paid by the Penang Water Supply Corporation.
Mat Sabu had claimed that he sustained a tear in his knee ligament when a police car rammed into him on July 9.
