Anwar's car sabotaged...

Anwar Ibrahim's driver of 28 years has claimed that there has been a plot to sabotage the PKR de facto leader's car.

The Mercedes Benz S350 belonging to an unidentified friend of Anwar's was tampered with, said Abdullah Sani Said, 51, adding that there could be a sinister motive against the politician.

Recounting the mishap, Abdullah Sani said he had been driving Anwar's wife and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and the Selangor menteri besar's political secretary Faekah Husin, from a party function in Chemor, Perak, late at night on April 19.

They were on the North-South Highway when a lorry overtaking them forced Abdullah Sani to slam on the brakes.

However, the car shook suddenly. This was followed by the sound of an explosion that came from the back of the car.

Abdullah Sani said he barely managed to steer the car to the side of the highway despite the very stiff rear tyre on the right.

Lodging a police report today at the Tropicana police station, a short walk from the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya, Abdullah Sani said he found broken pieces of the brake disc all over the highway, rendering the car completely immobile.

'Plot to harm Anwar'

However, according to his police report, the bigger shock came back when his regular mechanic told him that a caliper guide bolt pin to support the disc brake had been removed.

"I was told that it is impossible for the bolt to come off without someone removing it," Abdullah Sani (centre in photo) said in his report.

"The car was in good condition when we started driving it and since it is also impossible for the bolt to come off without someone removing it, I believe that someone did this deliberately to hurt or kill Anwar .

"Based on what the mechanic told me, there are also elements of sabotage, considering that the vehicle is regularly used by Anwar."

Attaching a statement by the mechanic with his police report, Abdullah Sani said: "I am worried for my safety, as well as that of Anwar's family, if this were to happen again."

When approached later by reporters, Abdullah Sani said that the last time he changed the brake pads for the car in October, the mechanic did not see any damage then.

He added that he waited three weeks after the incident to lodge a police report because both he and the mechanic wanted to be certain about the element of sabotage first.

Declining to speculate as to who may have tampered with the brakes, Abdullah Sani said: "You would have to know how to look for the pin bolt."
