PAS’s majority was just short of last year’s 5,433 margin when the turnout was higher. With a much lower turnout the status quo in terms of support for both PR and BN remains the same. Today’s turnout was 73.1 per cent compared to last year’s 82.57 per cent in 2008.
The win dealt a heavy blow to UMNO, which had gone into the fray on the premise that support for the coalition had increased and a wind of change is blowing across the Permatang Pasir constituency on polling day favouring UMNO, following its near-win in the Manek Urai by-election in Kelantan last month. In that election,UMNO lost by a mere 65 votes in a rural Malay constituency that was considered a PAS bastion.
Anwar said the victory reflected the people's trust in the opposition alliance. "Today's result proves that the people have rejected the divisive politics of Umno/BN,"
