Barisan Nasional has been humiliated at the polls for the third time in 10 months, said Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
"I am full of admiration for the hardworking party members who toiled for two weeks on a local struggle. But we lost because of a national problem," he said in a statement.
"The rakyat rejected Umno in its present form and style and they rejected its leadership," he added in reference to BN's defeat to PAS in yesterday’s Kuala Terengganu by-election.
PAS candidate Wan Abdul Wahid Endut beat BN's Wan Ahmad Farid Salleh by a 2,631-vote majority to snatch the parliamentary seat away from the ruling coalition.
Tengku Razaleigh said despite the 'ringing signals' from the rakyat through March 8 and Permatang Pauh, "Umno either has not heard the call for fundamental change or is unable to respond to it".
"Money, machinery and incumbency could not trump the call for change. BN will lose and will in the end lose everything until we respond fully and sincerely," he warned.
'Sinking ship'
However, he said the response from the leadership yet again is that this "should not be interpreted as voters having spurned BN."
“Our leadership remains in denial. Loyal members of Umno and BN will feel they are on a sinking ship,” he added.
Tengku Razaleigh also pointed out that Umno has lost by a large majority in a 90 percent Malay constituency.
"We lost because of Malay votes in a state whose government we control. We threw the national resources of a party in federal power at this election and still we lost," he lamented.
According to the Umno veteran, the election results was more than a referendum on the leadership.
"It was a test of the relevance of Umno in its present form,” he said, adding: "If Umno is no longer relevant to the Malays, the BN formula is dead."
The Chinese, he said, will have no reason to support MCA and so on. The power-sharing, consensual bargain on which our political system has been based since independence is broken, he noted.
"There are serious implications to this. We have always claimed that social peace in Malaysia is built on this bargain.
"A party leadership in denial is unlikely to form a government with the realism and guts to face an economic meltdown that it also denies is happening. We are in uncharted waters with no one at the wheel," he said.
On another note, Dr.Mahathir believes BN/UMNO which has ruled for half a century will be dumped at the next elections if it continues to embrace corrupt leaders.
"I think Najib is not to be blamed for (the by-election loss) but if he continues to elect or support corrupt leaders then I think he will lose the next general election," Mahathir said.
"Leaders who are discredited, who are involved with corruption, are still being chosen as candidates," he said, without naming names.
"If they want to win, get rid of these people."

UMNO is a sinking ship and Ku Li do you want to be part of it? Even your bid for presidency of UMNO had been manipulated and denied by these greedy UMNO leaders.
Ku Li, please dont cry over spilled milk. You can still play an important role in the administration of this country. Come and join us after all you were once in the opposition.
Najib is very much to be blamed for he's part of the system that preaches the politics of patronage, favouritism and discrimination. In fact Najib and Rosmah are liabilities to UMNO but they are still in denial and would rather pat on each others back. Najib knows his days are numbered..........
cheers.
