Selangor Executive Councillor Ronnie Liu Tan Khiew, 49, claimed trial at the Petaling Jaya magistrate’s court on Monday to abetment in obstructing a Subang Jaya Municipal Council enforcement officer from carrying out his duty last year.
He is accused of abetting Puchong’s Hotel Chile customers and workers in attempting to stop council official Mohamed Hadzim Zulkapli from discharging his duty on Nov 2 last year.
Magistrate Mohamad Ibrahim Mohammad Ghulam granted him bail of RM3,000 in one surety and set Feb 10 for mention.
Liu, who is a DAP central committee member and the Local Government, Study and Research Committee chairman, was arrested at the state secretariat building in Shah Alam on Wednesday this year and released on a RM2,000 bail on the same day.
Meanwhile, in Parliament on Monday, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said the charge against Liu was “very creative” and the Attorney-General's chambers had to explain why such a charge was rreated.
Lim said it was the first time he had heard of a charge of abetting in obstructing a public officer from carrying out his duty.
"Furthermore, the charge is vague as it does not mention who he allegedly abetted," Lim said.
Lim also took a swipe at the police for taking "too long" to bring the "very serious" case to court considering the incident occurred a year ago.
